Original NASA Caption:"Microscopic Imager Non-linearized Full frame EDR acquired on Sol 177 of Spirit's Mission to Gusev Crater at approximately 12:44:00 Mars Local Solar Time. Microscopic Imager "Dust Cover" commanded to be OPEN". This frame, as well as all the others which we have published on this daily IPF-APOD Public Page, has been colorized in Natural Colors (such as the colors that a perfect human eye would actually perceive if someone were on Mars, near the Spirit Rover, and then looked down, by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team). Of course, we are not in condition to be sure about the nature of the greenish substance that is clearly visible on the edge of the rocky surface shown by the Microscopic Imager, but we cannot exclude - with 100% certainty - a possible Biological origin of it. In fact, many Scientists and Researchers (even from NASA) actually believe that, at certain Martian Latitudes (such as the Equatorial and Peri-Equatorial ones), starting from the early Martian Spring and until late Martian Summer, under specific conditions of Pressure and Temperature, it might be possble, for a thin layer (they called it "film") of liquid water, to form all over a number of Surface Features, like the ones we are watching here. Let's also not forget that, starting from the late Martian Spring and until full Martian Summer, the Surface Temperature of said Equatorial and Peri-Equatorial Martian Regions can reach the 30° Celsius and, sometimes, even a little more. It is therefore possible to imagine that, maybe, some kind of "Mould" or even some form of "Moss" could actually grow and survive all over the Surface, for a certain time. Is this Science-Fiction? Maybe. Or maybe not. The only certain thing is that, so far, nobody (and we want to highlight and underline this last word: "NOBODY") can be one-hundred-percent sure of anything. If and when we shall set foot on Mars, then, in time, we should be able to find some real certainty; but until that day, we can only watch, study, imagine and, if we want, we can even speculate a little bit.... |
