In today's APOD, the second part of the "Midnight Sun" over Vastitas Borealis Region - Mars. This a realistic view of the Horizon of Vastitas Borealis (as seen by the camera onboard the NASA - Phoenix Lander), a few minutes after midnight (Mars Local Solar Time). Some Surface Relief (possibly the Outer Rim of the not too distant Heimdall Crater) is visible. Heimdall is (always Geologically speaking) a relatively recent Impact Crater named after the Norse Deity Heimdall. The Crater is approximately 20 Km away from the Landing Site of the NASA - Phoenix Lander and the Landing Site Area is believed to be blanketed by the Ejecta that were thrown all over this Region right after the impact that created Heimdall itself. The actual luminosity of the panorama has NOT been enhanced in any way. This frame has been colorized in Natural Colors (such as the colors that a perfect human eye - or an Electronic Eye - would actually perceive if someone were near the NASA - Phoenix Lander and then looked towards the Horizon and Sky of Mars), by using an original technique created - and, in time, dramatically improved - by the Lunar Explorer Italia Team. |
