Things change: that is a fact. A well known fact. But, as far as the so-called "Conventional Science" is concerned, things actually change (at least in a relatively fast way) only on Earth. The Moon (our Moon), is still. And so are most of the rocky Celestial Bodies of our Solar System. The obvious exceptions (meaning the rocky Celestial Bodies that actually show some superficial activity capable of changing their visible appearence) are, so far, and as far as we can tell, only a few: the Jovian moon "Io" (whose continuous and extreme Volcanic Activity makes the Surface of Io to change very rapidly) , the Saturnian moons Titan (with its Seas, Lakes and Rivers made of Hydrocarbons - probably the greatest Mistery of our Solar System. A mistery that should be deeply investigated!) and Enceladus (with its restless South Polar gigantic Geysers). And Mars? Mars is like a "still nature". Well, of course something, sometime, changes even there (on the so-called "Big Scale"): for example, both North and South Polar Ice Caps advance and retreat; new Gullies appear on the edge of several Craters and new Impact Craters form, even in recent times; the Martian Winds keep blowing violently on the Martian Surface, thus creating beautiful landforms, like Yardangs and Windstreaks and, maybe, some residual seismic and volcanic activities make some Rocks and Boulders roll down on the Martian Slopes. But the truth is that Mars - like our Friends from NASA and ESA keep telling us - is, substantially, a lonely and deserted World of silence and stillness. And they are probably right, of course. But, some other times, and on a VERY "small scale", we think that some things change rapidly even on the Red Planet. You do not believe it? Then watch this extremely educational GIF-Movie and then, if you wish, let us know your opinion: the GIF-Movie shows an unusually-looking Surface Feature that, somehow, appears from underneath a small rock, and then disappears. The frames used to create this GIF-Movie are relevant to the Soles (where the word "Sol" means a "Martian Day") 708 and 714 of NASA-MER Opportunity Mission to Meridiani Planum - Mars. |
