There are many ways to approach Science and, one of them (we will not say the best one, but certainly an EXCELLENT one...), is just by looking at things. It is just observing (and maybe admiring) them and then, if you are good enough, learning something from them. Said that, and as far as our specific field of expertise is concerned, we, as IPF, do believe that an excellent way to approach the study of the Cosmos, can be found in just looking at it. You can sit down, for instance, and then watch the Sky above yourself. If you are lucky, and a little adventurous, you can go into the middle of a desert, at night, and then look up. The Great Scientist, Dr Carl Sagan, if we are not mistaken, once said that "Astronomy is just looking up"! And if that is true, then you can also climb up to the top of a mountain (better would be if it is a very tall one!), and then look up, always, of course, during the night. Again. The Sky is something wonderful in itself, trust us, and you do not need telescopes, binoculars or even "Knowledge" to contemplate it. And there are very many places here, on Earth, where you can do that well. But today's APOD wants to offer you a "place" that is not here, on our Home Planet, anywhere nearby and where no human beings, probably for another thousand years (or more perhaps) will be able to go and look with their own very eyes: the place we are talking about, is the Space surrounding the Giant Gas-Planet Saturn. Today, we are pleased to offer you a short, and yet wonderful, GIF-Movie that shows - thorough the electronic eyes of the NASA - CASSINI Spacecraft - the true meaning of the aforementioned phrase "Looking up, at the Sky". And we are offering a REAL "vantage point" where you can observe, admire, and learn something, if you want. And if you are good and humble enough. Enjoy the ride... |
